The car has two spring-retained levers that ride on both edges of the cards. One controls steering, the other controls the car gearbox. Depending on the depth of the cuts on the cards, the car's steering and forward/neutral/reverse status are changed. The car pulls these cards through its undercarriage via a roller system, and the car's control levers follow the edges of the cards.
